Chi Rho: the video of three Salerno artists on show at FILMHUIS CAVIA in Amsterdam
On December 16th at 7:30 pm, as part of the Crawling through the Wreckage event at FILMHUIS CAVIA in Amsterdam on Avant Garde Experimental Film & VideoArt, curated by Gwendolyn Audrey Foster (film critic, writer, video artist and cinematographer at the University of Nebraska), the Chi Rho video will be screened and commented.
Chi Rho is the result of the creative experience of three Salerno video artists: Lello Cicalese, Marco Coraggio and Giuseppe De Marco, gathered on this occasion under the acronym CCD.
Presented in preview at the exhibition In the Sign of the Cross, organized by the portal of territorial promotion Sevensalerno in the suggestive Hall of Culture of the San Matteo Diocesan Museum in 2016, the video Chi Rho offers three different interpretations or, better to say, three variations on the theme and on the figure of Christ.
We asked the three authors to provide us with a key to understanding their work.
Lello Cicalese
In the stormy sea a boat is drifting…on board men, women, terrified children. Desperate people who face the risk of crossing the sea because the dangers they run from are much more real and concrete and are called war, hunger, despair. A path of hope that turns into an ordeal. In each of these men I see Christ, in each of these faces the desire to be reborn to new life.
Marco Coraggio
From Giotto to Francis Bacon, 60 famous crucifixions taken from famous paintings, frescoes and sculptures of art, circumscribed by the artist in the silhouette on a black background of a Christian cross, in continuous and fluid geometric transformation, testify to the unchanged evocative power of a signum that over the centuries and in its iconic form known to us since the edict of Constantine, has been able to resist and adapt to the constant pressures of change imposed by Western society.
Giuseppe De Marco
I have always been struck by the iconography of the cross as it was represented by the first millennium after Christ at the end of the Middle Ages: an icon rich in figures (saints, angels, nobles, etc.) in addition to the crucified Christ. Chosen as image the “Crucifix of San Damiano” for the realization of this video I wished ironically to represent, through the motion graphic, that in fact this crucifixion is never finished.
